About this game

Due to changes with the Google Play store, I have been unable to distribute my last update for this app on the store. The update contained a newer version of the Freedoom wad(s) and some language fixes.

Due to the deprecation of the build tools for this app, I have stopped active development. Please check out the GitHub and let me know if you are interested in taking over this project.

While this app will remain free and highly functional for most users, please also check out Beloko's 'DeltaTouch' as an alternative.

Why Freedoom?

While the game engine for everyone's favorite 1993 game and its many sequels are open source, most of its "assets" including textures, sounds, and game levels are copyrighted.

The Freedoom project offers an alternative, original, and community created set of assets and game levels that are open source. Combined with the opensource game engine, this makes for an entirely free and open source game.

In addition, this app is compatible with most fan made "WADs" (game levels) in the idgames archive.

This app is a fork of nvllsvm's GZDoom-Android port

Most custom wads can be played by:
1. place them under Freedoom/config/wads
2. Select the desired wad from the main screen by pressing "Addons", "WADS", then your desired wad
3. press "OK", then select the main game resource file to use (usually freedoom2.wad)
4. press "Launch"
5. start a "new game" as usual, but you will go to custom level instead of the normal first level of the game
6. (alternate) some levels replace other maps than the first one in the game and may require use of a warp command or special launch argument (such as -warp 3 1) to get to it

Full game iwads should be placed in Freedoom/config next to freedoom1.wad and freedoom2.wad

Game mods should be placed in Freedoom/config/mods

This is a solid port with a few serious issues. -Tweaking both d-pad's sensitivity can be difficult, and especially with movement it means you'll be bumping into walls a LOT. -1.Unless you dump DOOM1 and Doom2's wads into the same folder as the freedom wads, you won't be able to easily use them as the base wad you stack everything else on top of. And the two most damning: -2.There is a way to map additional buttons to actions like reload, crouch, alternate fire, etc. which different wads or gameplay conversions may allow. Here's the problem, something other uses have noted: -3.There is a menu for this with six small circles you can move, which can be mapped to a button in the options menu but from what I have seen, NO way to make these buttons usable during normal gameplay. -4.NO way to save GZDoom config settings, meaning every time that I launch a WAD to play, I have to go back into gameplay options and turn off freelook, and turn on message scaling. This right here is the real reason I don't launch this app too often anymore. EVERY time I launch or resume a WAD, I need to re-map keys (which don't work anyway), re-apply settings, and see if I can even play the wad.

The controls are pretty awkward but I think you can definitely get good with them. It will take some practice though. The default settings are kind of bad, as well. I say turn off freelook to simplify aiming ASAP. I beat the first two levels of PLUTONIA.WAD and then my hands started to hurt. But hey, it worked! And plutonia is no joke!

That's a decent tip. In this game engine, vertical aiming is automatic, so you only need to look left and right anyways

For what it is... It works! It's a .wad runner that uses Doom GZ at it's base. I do have a few minor gripes, though. For one, the default text size is small as hell. A simple fix, just go into the settings, but still a tad annoying. Secondly, making the settings (or the buttons) a bit more user-friendly. When I'm changing them up, I can't tell what is attack and what's interact until I try them out. Finally, although this might just be me, the controls just dont feel right. I dunno.8/10 from me.

If text / screen is too small, you can also increase the "divide resolution by" number in the options

What's new

Added 10sectors.wad and 10sectors2.wad, two level packs of close quarters brutality where guns, enemies, and ammo are packed tight. Get ready.
